Spanish Program

Foreign Language Program

The foreign language program at Starwood Academy offers primary, elementary and middle school students a rich variety of curricular experiences to learn Spanish as a Second Language.

Through the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, students are able to develop their awareness, and understanding of the Hispanic culture. This curriculum also provides each grade level with specific goals to achieve a better understanding and developing of a positive attitude toward learning the Spanish language.

Primary Curriculum

In Primary, students are introduced to Spanish through engaging, hands-on activities that tap into their natural curiosity and language-learning ability. Storybooks, puppets, flashcards, rhymes, songs, and manipulatives make lessons interactive and fun.

Meeting once a week for 30 minutes, students explore foundational vocabulary, including days of the week, months, seasons, weather, colors, numbers (1-30), shapes, animals, body parts, family words, greetings, fruits, vegetables, transportation, and the life cycle of insects and plants.
Young learners explore Spanish through stories, songs, and play, building a strong foundation for language development.
Students expand their Spanish skills with conversation, cultural exploration, and interactive activities.

The Lower Elementary Curriculum

Lower Elementary students build on their Spanish skills by practicing basic conversations, following simple instructions, and asking and answering questions. They learn colors, numbers (1-50), days of the week, months, body parts, and dates, while also singing songs and exploring cultural elements such as food, clothing, musical instruments, and the 21 Spanish-speaking countries.

Their vocabulary expands to include family members, classroom objects, animals, and life cycles. Seasonal traditions, including Mexican Christmas carols and birthday songs, bring language and culture to life through music and art.

The Upper Elementary Curriculum

Upper Elementary students deepen their Spanish knowledge through structured lessons that reinforce and expand upon prior learning.

Using a workbook for vocabulary and grammar practice, they master topics such as the alphabet, greetings, descriptions, numbers (1-1000), seasons, weather, dates, family trees, prepositions, adjectives, and verb conjugations (-AR, -ER, -IR) in the present tense.

Students also explore the roles of community members, learn to tell time, and engage with Wh-questions. Cultural enrichment continues with traditional songs and art projects, and students begin reading and writing short sentences while understanding familiar spoken conversations.
A deeper dive into Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and communication prepares students for real-world conversations.
Students refine their fluency and confidence through structured lessons, cultural connections, and engaging dialogue.

The Middle School Curriculum

Middle School Spanish builds on previous learning with a greater focus on grammar, reading comprehension, and conversational proficiency.

Using a structured Spanish textbook, students refine their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Each unit includes grammar exercises, dialogues, reading passages, comprehension questions, and cultural activities like games and puzzles.

Students engage in conversations about daily life, express opinions, and expand their vocabulary with topics such as family, classroom objects, daily routines, verb conjugations (including irregular and preterite tense), and numbers. They also explore school subjects, geography, math, weather, and measurement concepts—all in Spanish.
